One chassis, three destinies
The Ace went on sale in 1953 on a steel ladder chassis with three-inch tubular main rails, carrying a hand-built aluminium body shaped on English wheeling machines. The Aceca is that car with a fastback roof and a tailgate. The Cobra is that car with a Ford V8.
All three descend from the same origin, and this archive covers it elsewhere in the story of LOY 500. What is worth holding onto here is that the chassis under a Cobra sold for millions today is the chassis under an Aceca, drawn up for a small firm in Surrey a decade before anyone in Detroit had heard of either.
The Cobra exists because Bristol stopped making engines
This is the part usually left out, and Aceca owners will recognise it immediately, because the same event shaped their own cars.
AC had used three engines in the Ace: its own Light Six, then the Bristol six descended from the pre-war BMW 328, and finally, when Bristol supply ended, a 2.6-litre Ford Zephyr unit. That last change mattered visually as well as mechanically. The Zephyr engine let AC redesign the front, with a lower bonnet line and a smaller air intake.
So by 1961 AC was a small company with a well-sorted chassis, a body it could build by hand, and no long-term engine. That is the situation Carroll Shelby walked into.
September 1961 to January 1962
In September 1961 Ford gave Shelby two of its new 221 cubic inch small-block V8s. One of them was shipped to England. By January 1962 mechanics at AC Cars in Thames Ditton had completed the prototype, known then as the AC Ace 3.6, chassis number CSX2000.
Turning an Ace into a Cobra was not simply a matter of dropping the engine in. The steering box had to be moved outward to clear the wider V8, and the old E.N.V. differential was replaced by a Salisbury 4HU unit with inboard disc brakes to cope with the power.
The working arrangement that followed is worth stating plainly, because it is routinely misdescribed. AC built the cars. Completed, painted and trimmed, less engine and gearbox, they were shipped from Thames Ditton to Shelby's workshop in Los Angeles, where the American drivetrain went in. The Cobra is a British car with an American engine, not an American car with a British body.

The face is the Ruddspeed face
There is a family resemblance between a late Ace, an Aceca and a Cobra that is not imagined. The lower, narrower nose developed for the Ford-engined 2.6 cars is the frontal treatment that fed straight into the Cobra's styling.
It is a small thing and it is the most visible thing. The Cobra's face was drawn in Surrey for a car of which only a handful were made.
What it won, and what it did not
The Cobra's competition record is genuinely remarkable and it is also routinely overstated, so it is worth setting out carefully.
Six Shelby Daytona Coupes were built between 1964 and 1965, the first of them on a roadster chassis that had been crashed at Le Mans in 1963. At Le Mans in 1964, CSX2299 took first place in the GT class and fourth overall in the hands of Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant, timed at over 196 mph on the Mulsanne Straight. A second car, CSX2287, was leading the GT class when it was disqualified in the tenth hour for a jump start.
In 1965 the Daytona Coupes won the GT class of the International Championship for GT Manufacturers by nineteen points, which made Shelby the first American constructor to win a title at the FIA World Championships. They beat Ferrari doing it.
What no AC-based car ever did was win Le Mans outright. Carroll Shelby did win Le Mans, in 1959, driving an Aston Martin DBR1 with Roy Salvadori, and again as the manager of Ford's GT40 programme in 1966 and 1967. Neither of those was an AC. The three achievements are frequently merged into one, and the version with an AC winning Le Mans outright is not true.
How many were made
The Mark I ran to 126 cars from 1962 to 1963. The first 75, including the prototype, carried the 4.3-litre 260 cubic inch Windsor V8; the remaining 51 had the 4.7-litre 289. About 528 Mark IIs followed between 1963 and the summer of 1965. The Mark III accounted for 655 leaf-spring and 343 coil-spring cars, and roughly 260 of the big 427s were built as road cars.
Set that against the AC Aceca, of which 151 were built with the AC engine, 169 with the Bristol and 8 with the Ford 2.6. The Cobra outsold every closed AC many times over, and it did so on the Aceca's chassis.
Why this belongs in an Aceca archive
Because it is the same car, and because the Aceca is generally the one left out of the story.
The usual telling begins in Texas, with an American racing driver and a Ford engine. It is a good story and it is half of one. The other half is a small British firm at Thames Ditton with a hand- beaten aluminium body, a Surrey-designed chassis, and no engine supplier, which built the cars, shipped them across the Atlantic, and has been a footnote in its own history ever since.
An Aceca owner is not driving a lesser relative of the Cobra. They are driving the same car with a roof on it.
