Three weaknesses that belong to the car
Almost everything written about a sixty-year-old car blames the car for what its owners did. Three things on the Aceca are genuinely the design's own.
The cooling system has no margin
This archive's fault-finding handbook puts it plainly: the cooling system on all three engines is marginal by modern standards and unforgiving of neglect. That is not the same as saying it will strand you. It means there is no reserve. A radiator that would be merely tired on another car is an overheat on this one, and these alloy-headed engines are expensive to repair when it goes wrong.
The counterweight is that the problem is almost always findable. An Aceca that runs hot nearly always has a specific cause: a furred core, a weak pump, a stuck thermostat, retarded timing, a lean mixture, a slipping belt, or air in the system. A biennial cooling flush is described elsewhere on this site as the single most valuable maintenance job on an Aceca, and that is not an exaggeration.
The body is three materials that dislike each other
An aluminium skin over a steel frame with an ash timber structure is a combination that depends entirely on staying dry. Where the aluminium meets the steel, moisture sets up a galvanic reaction that corrodes the alloy from behind, showing as bubbling paint, white powdery deposits and pinholing along panel edges and seams. Where damp sits in the ash, it rots, and the tell is sagging doors and poor shut lines.
Neither is curable in any final sense. Both are controlled rather than fixed, by correct insulation between the dissimilar metals and by keeping the car dry and ventilated. A damp garage is the enemy of both the ash and the alloy.
The Bristol head asks more of you
On Aceca-Bristol cars the cross-pushrod exhaust arrangement has more wear points than a conventional head. That is a characteristic rather than a fault, but it is a maintenance sensitivity: the clearances must be checked carefully and set exactly to the manual. Clearances that will not hold are a signal to stop and consult a specialist rather than to keep adjusting around them.
Two things that sound like faults and are not
Crash first gear. The Aceca's first gear has no synchromesh, and the crunch people hear is the dog teeth striking each other while spinning at different speeds. It is not the box being worn or broken. The design logic of the period was to spend the money on second, third and top and leave first as a plain crash gear, and double-declutching is a skill anyone can learn in an afternoon. One caveat matters: every crunch is spending the box's future, because rounded dog teeth eventually make a gearbox jump out of gear under load.
The Bristol freewheel. On Bristol cars the freewheel makes the car seem to coast when you lift off in first. It catches people out and it is working exactly as designed. This archive's buying guide is explicit that it is a feature of the design, not a symptom, and a seller who apologises for it does not know the car.
Everything else is about how the car was kept
This is the useful half of the answer, because it is the half you can inspect for.
The steering box is a good example of a component with an undeserved reputation. The Aceca is not naturally prone to wandering, and when it does, the fault is setup and wear rather than the box itself. This archive records one original unrestored box still in service at 450,000 km.
Charging problems are the same story. Most complaints are a slipping belt, poor earths, a dirty or mis-set control box, or worn dynamo brushes, rarely the dynamo failing outright, and cleaning an earth is the single commonest cure.
Bearing failure is put squarely where it belongs. Most bottom-end damage follows months of quietly falling oil pressure that was there to be seen. A sudden loss of pressure means stop the engine immediately, because running on low pressure destroys bearings within minutes.
Brake fade traces to old fluid rather than to the brakes. Glycol fluid absorbs moisture, and moisture boils, putting compressible vapour in the lines exactly when you need them. Renewal every one to two years regardless of mileage is the whole of the answer.
One genuine hazard is not a fault at all but a matter of knowing your car. The Aceca is positive earth. Connect a battery the wrong way round and you can damage the dynamo, ruin the regulator, cook a modern radio or start a fire, and jump-starting from a modern negative-earth vehicle needs care.

What it actually costs when something goes wrong
The pattern in this archive's own fault database is consistent. Cheap and mostly within an owner's reach, at roughly nothing to £150: balancing the carburettors, ignition consumables, hot-starting cures, belts and dynamo brushes, a cooling flush, a fluid change.
The bills that hurt: a radiator recore at £350 to £700, a carburettor rebuild at £250 to £600 per bank, brake work at £150 to £500 and upwards per axle, a rear main seal or a gearbox-out clutch at £600 and upwards, and a gearbox rebuild at £1,200 to £2,500.
Then there is the structure, which is in a category of its own. Body repair runs from hundreds to low thousands for corrosion caught early, and this archive's inspection guide warns that hidden structural problems can be worth tens of thousands of pounds. Body and frame repair is skilled coachwork and is priced accordingly.
So, is it a good car?
For what it is, yes, and more usable than its rarity suggests. The mechanical package is honest, owner-serviceable and well understood, the specialists exist, and the faults that occur in ordinary use are diagnosable and mostly affordable. Watch the oil pressure and the temperature gauge, keep to the flush and fluid intervals, store it dry, and an Aceca will be used rather than merely owned.
The judgement you are really making is not about reliability at all. It is about which car you buy. Almost every ruinous Aceca bill is structural, invisible from ten feet away, and already present on the day you hand over the money. That is why the pre-purchase inspection matters more on this car than on most, and why the exterior tells you least of all.
