The chassis and frame
An Aceca is built on a tubular steel ladder chassis, and its integrity is everything. Look for corrosion, previous accident damage, and amateur repairs to the tubes, particularly around the suspension mounting points and anywhere water collects. On a hand-built frame, poor past repairs — sloppy welds, mismatched patches — are a serious red flag. A specialist will sound the structure for the dull note of hidden rot rather than trusting a shiny surface.
The ash frame and aluminium body
The Aceca body is hand-formed aluminium panelling over a composite frame of steel tube and ash timber — three materials, three distinct problems. Check the woodwork for rot, softness and past bodging, especially at the base of the door pillars, the floor edges, and around the tailgate aperture. Then check the aluminium itself — for corrosion, cracking around stress points and fixings, filler, and poor panel fit. Crucially, where aluminium panels meet the steel frame, galvanic corrosion can quietly eat the metal from within; bubbling paint along those joints is a warning sign. Panel gaps and the way the doors, bonnet and tailgate shut tell you a lot about the quality of past work and whether the structure is true. The engine
What to check on an Aceca engine depends on which of the three units the car carries. The AC Light Six is a robust but elderly design; listen for the usual signs of wear, check oil pressure, and confirm it pulls cleanly — it is torquey but not a high-revver. The Bristol six is a more complex and more expensive unit, with its distinctive cross-pushrod valvetrain and three carburettors; a proper rebuild is costly and specialist work, so evidence of a recent, competent overhaul is valuable, and a smoking or noisy Bristol should be costed carefully. The Ford Ruddspeed unit in the 2.6 is rare and was offered in several tunes, so originality of specification matters. In every case, confirm the engine number against the paperwork.

Transmission, suspension, brakes and steering
Check the four-speed gearbox and, where fitted, the overdrive for clean operation. The all-independent suspension uses transverse leaf springs and wishbones; inspect the springs, bushes, trunnions and kingpins for wear, and feel for vibration or wandering on the road. Brakes are drums on the earliest cars and front discs from 1957, standard from 1958 — check which the car has and that it stops squarely; the finned alloy drums are attractive but need to be in good order. Steering was originally a worm and Bishop-cam box, though many cars have been converted to rack-and-pinion; neither is wrong, but know which you are looking at and check for excessive play.
Electrics, interior and the underside
The original wiring is often tired; a tidy, sympathetic rewire is a plus. Inside, assess the leather, the burr-walnut trim and the Smiths instruments — retrimming and instrument restoration are possible but not cheap. Finally, get the car up on a ramp: the underside reveals the truth about the chassis, the floors and any hidden repairs far better than a walk-round ever will.
The golden rule
Never buy an Aceca on the strength of a good-looking exterior. Commission a pre-purchase inspection from a recognised AC or Bristol specialist, because the difference between a sound car and a cosmetically-tidy problem can be tens of thousands of pounds.
