Sisters under the skin

The AC Ace and the AC Aceca are the same car in two different suits. Both were built by AC Cars at Thames Ditton between the mid-1950s and 1963; both ride on John Tojeiro's twin-tube ladder chassis with all-independent suspension by transverse leaf springs; both were offered with the same three engines — AC's own 2-litre six, the Bristol 2-litre, and the Ford Zephyr 2.6. The Ace came first, in 1953, as an open roadster clearly inspired by the Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta. The Aceca followed a year later as its fixed-head coupé sister, sharing everything mechanical from the bulkhead forward and back.

The Ace: open, pure, lighter

The Ace is the purer sports car of the two. Roughly 55 kg lighter than the Aceca in comparable trim, with no roof and no rear glass, it is the more elemental machine — the car that made AC's name in period sports-car racing and, most famously, went on to become the AC Cobra when Carroll Shelby dropped a Ford V8 into its engine bay. Around 723 were built. Today it is the better-known of the pair, benefiting from the Cobra connection and the perennial appeal of open two-seaters.

The Aceca: closed, cleaner, more usable

The Aceca is the more sophisticated, more usable car. Its coupé roof adds weight but also aerodynamic order — a properly resolved fastback with a lift-up rear tailgate, making the Aceca only the second production hatchback in the world after the Aston Martin DB2/4 of 1953. At speed the closed shape is calmer and quieter than the Ace; the cabin is trimmed as a small grand tourer rather than a sports car, with a proper headlining, wind-up windows, and luggage space under that hinged rear glass. Just 328 were built, making it well over twice as rare as its open sister.

Same chassis, same engines, same Surrey workshop. One went racing; the other went touring.

Performance and handling

On paper the two are remarkably close. Straight-line performance is nearly indistinguishable — the Aceca's marginal weight penalty is almost cancelled by its cleaner aerodynamics, so top speed and 0–60 times differ by fractions rather than seconds. In the corners the Ace's lower mass and lower centre of gravity give it a slight edge in agility and turn-in feel; the Aceca replies with better high-speed stability, less wind noise, and a more composed ride over long distances. Neither is slow, neither is heavy by modern standards, and both are famous for the delicacy of their steering.

Practicality: the pioneering hatchback

This is where the Aceca pulls decisively ahead. The Ace has a modest boot lid and little in the way of weather protection; long trips two-up with luggage are an exercise in careful packing. The Aceca's lift-up tailgate opens onto a genuinely usable load area behind the seats — an innovation that pre-dates almost every modern hatchback and, in the mid-1950s, was a serious point of difference. Add wind-up windows, a heater that works, and a properly finished cabin, and the Aceca becomes the one you would actually choose for a weekend in France.

Rarity and value

The Ace is the more famous car and, thanks to its status as the direct ancestor of the Cobra, generally the more valuable one. But the Aceca is significantly rarer — 328 built against 723 Aces — and remains, for now, a more attainable way into a hand-built Thames Ditton AC of the period. For the buyer who wants the same chassis, the same engines and the same craftsmanship as an Ace, but with a roof, a hatchback, and roughly half the survivors, the Aceca is an obvious answer.

If the Ace is the racing driver's AC, the Aceca is the enthusiast's grand tourer — rarer, quieter and, quietly, more practical.

Which one?

There is no wrong answer. The Ace is the definitive open British sports car of its era and the direct forebear of the Cobra; the Aceca is the closed, more useable, rarer sister that pioneered the sporting hatchback and offers almost identical performance in a more civilised package.
