An Aceca that runs cool on the move but climbs the temperature gauge in traffic is almost always suffering from insufficient airflow through the radiator at low speed, or a tired thermostat/water pump. The cooling system on all three engines is marginal by modern standards and unforgiving of neglect.

- Radiator core partially blocked internally by scale and old inhibitor
- Radiator matrix fins bent or blocked externally, restricting airflow
- Thermostat stuck partially closed or wrong-rating
- Water pump impeller worn or corroded, giving poor circulation

- Weak or lean mixture on one carburettor cooking that bank
Diagnostic checks
- Feel the top and bottom hoses hot: a large temperature drop across the radiator means it is working; a small drop suggests it is not.
- Inspect the radiator matrix from behind for bent fins, insect debris, or road dirt.
- Verify thermostat opens at rated temperature in a pan of hot water.
- Confirm ignition timing with a strobe against the workshop-manual figure.
- Check the cooling fan is running and blades are undamaged.
The fix
Backflush the system with a proprietary cooling cleaner, fit a fresh thermostat of the correct rating, refill with the specified coolant/inhibitor mix, and bleed thoroughly. If the radiator does not respond to backflushing, remove it and have it recored by a radiator specialist — a period brass/copper core is worth restoring.

Idle hunts or will not settle
An unsteady idle on a triple-carburettor Aceca almost always traces to unbalanced airflow between the three carburettors, an air leak past a worn throttle spindle, or a mixture that is drifting. It is a setup problem before it is an engine problem.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Three carburettors out of balance at idle
- Worn throttle spindles admitting unmetered air (particularly Solex)
- Split rubber connectors in the throttle linkage
- Blocked idle jet or dirty float chamber after standing
- Vacuum leak at manifold or servo hose

Diagnostic checks
- Warm the engine fully and place a balance meter over each intake.
- Spray a little carburettor cleaner around the throttle spindles and manifold joints with the engine running; a rise in idle rpm indicates a leak.
- Check SU damper oil level; top up with the correct grade only.
- Verify all vacuum hoses are intact and clipped.
The fix
Balance the three carburettors and re-set mixture per the procedure on the tuning page; replace any perished throttle-linkage rubbers; renew SU damper oil to the specified grade. If throttle spindles are worn, the carburettors need to come off for rebush — this is specialist work.

When to stop DIY: Worn Solex spindles cannot be adjusted out. If balancing does not settle the idle and a spindle leak is confirmed, entrust the carburettors to a specialist for rebushing rather than persevering with adjustment.

Misfire under load or at higher rpm
A misfire that appears when the engine is asked to work — climbing hills, accelerating hard — is far more often ignition than fuel. Points, condenser, HT leads, plugs and distributor cap are the first suspects. All three Aceca engines run a Lucas distributor with points and condenser.

- Points pitted, gap closed, or dwell wrong
- Failing condenser (intermittent misfire, often heat-related)
- Worn HT leads or tracked distributor cap

Diagnostic checks
- Pull each plug in turn and read the tip: colour, fouling, gap.

- Swap in a known-good coil to isolate.
- In the dark, look for HT arcing along leads and cap.
The fix
Service the ignition end-to-end: fresh points and condenser, gap and dwell set to the workshop-manual figure, new plugs of the specified grade correctly gapped, new HT leads if arcing, new cap and rotor if tracked. Consider a modern electronic-ignition trigger (Pertronix, Accuspark) inside the original distributor as a reliability upgrade.

When to stop DIY: If the distributor shaft has visible play or the advance mechanism sticks, have the distributor overhauled by a specialist rather than living with it — a wandering timing curve wastes fuel, cooks the engine, and hides other faults.

Hard to start when hot
A warm engine that cranks and cranks before catching is usually suffering from fuel percolation in the carburettors or from ignition weakness that a cold engine tolerates. On a triple-carb Aceca the fuel path runs close to hot exhaust manifolding, and modern ethanol-blended fuel makes matters worse.

- Fuel percolating / vaporising in float chambers on heat soak
- Weak spark from tired coil or condenser under heat

Reroute or heat-shield any fuel line running close to hot metal; fit ethanol-resistant fuel hose throughout; verify the choke is fully off when hot; replace suspect coil or condenser. Where percolation is chronic, an insulating spacer under the carburettors and a slightly enriched cold-start procedure often help.

Persistent oil leaks
Any 60-year-old British six leaks a little oil; the question is where, and how much. Rear main seals, timing covers, rocker gaskets and sump joints are the usual sources. A dry underside is not the goal — a diagnosed and controlled leak is.

- Check crankcase breather is clear — a blocked breather pressurises the case and pushes oil past every seal.
- Torque rocker cover to the correct figure with a fresh gasket, no more.
The fix
Fit a new rocker cover gasket, torque correctly; renew sump gasket if weeping. Timing cover and rear main seal renewal are engine-out or gearbox-out jobs and are specialist work on these engines.

When to stop DIY: A rear main seal that is losing oil in cupfuls, or is contaminating the clutch, needs specialist engine-out attention — do not run the car on a failing seal.

Brakes pull to one side
A car that pulls under braking has an imbalance across an axle — usually one wheel cylinder or caliper piston seizing, contamination on one side's linings, or a collapsed flexible hose acting as a one-way valve. Take this seriously and stop driving until diagnosed.

- Seized wheel cylinder or caliper piston on the opposite side
- Oil or brake fluid contamination on one side's linings
- Collapsed internal lining of a flexible brake hose
- Loose caliper mounting or worn kingpin/suspension bush
Diagnostic checks
- Jack each wheel and check for free rotation with the brake released.
- Inspect flexible hoses for bulging under pedal pressure.
- Remove drums/callipers and inspect linings and pistons for cleanliness and free movement.
The fix
Overhaul the offending wheel cylinder or caliper, replace suspect flexible hoses (both sides of an axle at once), fit new linings if contaminated, and bleed the system with fresh DOT-specified fluid. Where the drum/caliper is beyond service, replace as an axle pair.

When to stop DIY: Brakes are safety-critical. Unless you are experienced with drum and disc hydraulics, this is specialist work — book the car in and do not drive it in the meantime.

Gearbox jumps out of gear
A gearbox that pops out of a particular gear on the overrun has worn selector detents, worn synchro hubs, or worn gear teeth. On a 60-year-old box this is a rebuild job, not an adjustment.

- Worn selector detent springs / balls
- Worn or chipped synchro hub or dog teeth on the affected gear
- Loose gearbox mountings letting the box move under load
- Worn input shaft / layshaft bearings
Diagnostic checks
- Confirm gearbox mountings are tight and rubbers intact.
- Note whether the jump-out is on drive or overrun, and in which gear.
- Listen for bearing noise that changes with clutch engagement.
The fix
Gearbox out and rebuild by a classic-transmission specialist. Detent parts can be replaced during a rebuild, but doing so without addressing synchro and bearing wear is a false economy.

A car of this era runs a dynamo (later cars) and a mechanical voltage regulator — a fundamentally simple charging system with a handful of usual failures. A flat battery after a run is almost always the charging system, not the battery itself.

- Broken or corroded earth strap between engine and chassis

Diagnostic checks
- With the engine running above idle, measure voltage at the battery: it should climb above resting voltage.
- Check fan belt tension and condition.
- Verify earth strap continuity.
- Remove and inspect dynamo brushes.
The fix
Renew fan belt if slipping; clean or replace dynamo brushes; have the regulator serviced or replaced by a classic-auto-electrical specialist; renew battery only after charging system is proven. A modern solid-state regulator inside the original box is a common upgrade.

Blistering or white powder on aluminium body panels
White powder or blistering under paint on an Aceca panel is galvanic corrosion — the aluminium body reacting with the steel frame or fasteners through trapped moisture. Left, it eats through the panel. Caught early, it is arrestable.

- Steel bolts or clips in direct contact with aluminium without isolation
- Water trapped between ash frame and aluminium skin
- Failed paint / primer letting moisture reach the metal
- Old body filler holding moisture against the panel
Diagnostic checks
- Inspect closely along lower door skins, sill / rocker areas, and around steel-mounted trim.
- Look for paint blistering, powdering, or panel pitting.
- Check ash-frame condition where accessible: soft or damp timber accelerates panel corrosion.
The fix
Isolate steel/aluminium interfaces with the correct sealant or gaskets when refitting trim; strip, treat and re-prime affected areas with an etch primer suitable for aluminium; address the underlying moisture path (ash frame, seals, drains). Structural repair of a corroded panel is a coachbuilder's job.
