Diagnose the Lucas dynamo and control box charging system

The Aceca charges through a Lucas dynamo and a separate control box, not an alternator. Most charging complaints are a slipping belt, poor earths, a dirty or mis-set control box, or worn dynamo brushes — rarely the dynamo failing outright. Confirm the car's earth polarity before connecting anything, as reversed polarity destroys components.

Procedure

  1. Before connecting any meter, battery or replacement part, confirm the car's earth polarity — many British cars of this era are positive earth. Match every connection to it; reversed polarity can ruin the dynamo, control box and ignition.

  2. Check the dynamo drive belt: a glazed or slack belt slips and undercharges. Set the tension to the workshop-manual deflection figure.

  3. With the engine off, clean and tighten every earth in the charging path — dynamo-to-engine, engine-to-chassis and the battery earth. Poor earths mimic a failing dynamo.

  4. Test the dynamo output using the manual's method (typically disconnecting it from the control box and checking that output voltage rises with engine speed). Little or no output usually means worn brushes or a dirty commutator.

  5. Inspect the control box: check for burnt or dirty contacts, and confirm the cut-in and regulation settings against the manual. Setting a control box is fiddly and should be done with a meter to the manual figures.

  6. Reconnect and run the engine, confirming a healthy charge at the battery that rises then settles to the regulated voltage, without overcharging.

  7. If output is still absent after belt, earth and brush checks, the dynamo needs specialist overhaul — re-brushing, a commutator skim, or a rewind.

Warnings

  • Confirm polarity before connecting a battery, meter or replacement dynamo or control box. Reversed polarity can destroy them.
  • After any disconnection or replacement, the dynamo must be re-polarised to match the car's earth polarity — follow the manual's procedure before starting the engine.
  • Do not run the dynamo with its main output lead disconnected while the field is connected; follow the manual's test connections to avoid damaging it.
