Cooling the Bristol Six: Radiator, Water Pump and Running Temperature
The Bristol two-litre six is a precise, hard-working engine, and like any classic it is happiest kept cool. Looking after the cooling system is quiet, unglamorous work — and some of the most valuable maintenance you can do.
Why cooling matters
An engine that runs hot suffers everywhere — oil breaks down, the risk of a blown head gasket or distortion rises, and long-term wear accelerates. On a valuable, precision six like the Bristol, keeping temperatures in check is cheap insurance against expensive trouble. The good news is that the cooling system is simple; it just needs to be kept in good order rather than neglected until it boils.
Coolant: condition, not just level
The single most important thing is the coolant itself. Old, exhausted coolant loses its corrosion inhibitors and lets scale and rust build up, silting the radiator and eroding the waterways. Renew the coolant on a sensible schedule with the correct mix and a proper inhibitor, rather than endlessly topping up with water. Clean coolant does more to protect the engine than almost anything else.
The radiator
A radiator that is furred up inside or clogged with debris outside cannot shed heat. The signs are a car that runs hot in traffic or on a climb, or one that is slow to warm and then overheats. A radiator that is silted internally is best recored or professionally cleaned rather than repeatedly flushed; a good core is fundamental to keeping temperatures down.
Water pump, thermostat and hoses
The water pump circulates the coolant; a weeping pump — drips, a stain, or a wet weep-hole — or one with worn bearings, felt as a rumble or play in the pulley, wants attention. The thermostat should open and close at the right temperature; a stuck one causes either overheating or an engine that never properly warms. The hoses perish, soften and swell with age, and a hose that fails on the road empties the system in seconds, so renew tired ones before they let go.
Reading the gauge
Learn what normal looks like on your car's temperature gauge, and watch it. A needle that climbs and keeps climbing — especially in traffic — is a warning to stop before it boils, not to press on. Catching a cooling problem early, at the gauge, is far cheaper than dealing with the damage overheating causes.
Keeping on top of it
None of this is difficult: fresh coolant, a clean and healthy radiator, a sound pump and thermostat, good hoses, and an eye on the gauge. Do that, and the Bristol six will run at the temperature it was designed for, and reward you with the smooth, willing performance it is famous for.
